In Illinois, Northwestern University has a Varsity program. This is a NCAA Division 1 program competing in the Big Ten Conference.

In order to play at the Varsity level in college, athletes typically have to be recruited out of high school.

There are currently no club team competing in the NFHL based in the state of Illinois.
